I have been collecting memories for a while now, but the box is different. It contains physical artifacts. Official documents. Letters from a girlfriend. Notes and school assignments Kris wrote himself. It holds facts and clues to Kris’s life, his death. It is more than a box.

Tomorrow I will open the box myself. I will pack up the contents into a small black duffel bag and in a few days we will fly back to San Francisco with it sitting at my feet. When we get home, the duffel bag will sit in the corner of the living room for several days before I open it. I will slowly sift through these artifacts over several months.

Now, lying in bed beside Julia, in the darkness of the night, I think of Kris and the contents of the box. I see Kris though my eyes are closed. The room is hot and I cannot sleep. I just lie there. I do not see Kris as a child, smiling, telling stories, as I’d like to see him. Instead, I see Kris, out in the living room, hanging. I try to think of something else but I can think only of the box, the living room, him hanging. This is what I see until I fall asleep, and with sleep, forget for a while.
